Marilyn M. Friedman's theory of Family Nursing (1981) maintains a systemic view of families by making use of both social and psychological models and theories of human interaction. She combines these theoretical approaches to a unique approach to family nursing, which emphasizes structural-functional aspects of families, their health, and emotional as well as physical well-being. Friedman and Levac (2003) propose a five-phase model for family nursing, which includes the following phases: family assessment, family nursing diagnoses, planning, family nursing intervention, and evaluation. Phase 1 (assessment) focuses on family strengths and includes personal data of each family member, assessment of living environment, and assessment of family systems through genograms (McGoldrick & Gerson, 1985) and other standard tools.
