ents and educators. The LHCLCC offers unique programs like an after school Homework Assistance Program for third to seventh graders. Information and Referral Services provide legal assistance, social services, health care, educational and community resource information as well as various workshops. The LCHLCC offers programs for adults, teens and young children. On the day I visited the LHCLCC, there was a book discussion for adults, a make your own tote bag workshop for young adults, and a program for children called Silly Stories and Songs, where storyteller Tammy Hall was entertain children with songs and stories from around the world. The LCHLCC provides invaluable resources and services for middle- and lower-income African Americans in addition to its other services.
2) The Schomburg for Research in Black Culture is one of the leading research centers in the world that focuses on the preservation of materials on individuals of African descent and African American experiences worldwide. Located in Harlem, the Center also acts as a national research library, offering free access to its diverse non-circulating collections. The Center came to international prominence in 1926, when it featured the personal collection of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, a Puerto-Rican born Black scholar and book lover. At this point in time the collection was part of the Division of Negro Literature, History and Prints of the 135th street branch of the New York Public Library. Schomburg was the curator during the 1930s until his death in 1938, at which time the center was renamed in his honor in 1940.
