The story focuses on a group of young boys, stranded on an island after a plane crash. On the first days the boys begin to form a structured society, with Ralph being made the groupÆs leader and Jack being in the position of leader of the hunters. True to his nature, during the formation of roles, Piggy attempts to keep order among the group. When the boys attempt to make a fire to promote their rescue, one of them becomes lost. His loss represents the beginning disorder of what will eventually become chaos. As Jack leads the search for a wild pig, Ralph tries to erect shelter and makes a fire to help get them rescued. Many of the others decide it is more fun to play JackÆs hunting games.

A conch that Piggy finds becomes the means of calling the group to order. Whoever possesses it has the right to speak. One of the boys declares he has seen a beast in the woods, which Jack uses to his advantage for ever more bizarre hunting rituals. As the months wear on, the harsh elements begin to affect the boys. Contention among them rises, as Jack becomes more aggressive, smashing PiggyÆs glasses. Ralph is angry that the rescue fire goes out because the others play games without working.

The boys kill a sow in a bloody attack, placing its head on a stick. In a trance, Simon dubs it the ôLord of the fliesö, warning the others evil comes from within. His vision is meant to demonstrate that evil resides within and that it is something that cannot be killed but must be rigidly maintained through social values, ideals, and order, ôFancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill.
