My life has changed considerably since my family moved to America two years ago. I followed them after finishing my duty of military service. As the child of immigrant parents, I have been exposed to some practical and cultural obstacles which have threatened to prevent my ongoing education. The main difficulty I needed to overcome was trying to find a way to help my father in running his business, whilst continuing my education. My father opened a small business in America, and needed my assistance in following the correct procedures to attain a trading license. His English is weak, leaving him dependent upon me to assist him with the financial aspects of operating his business. My commitments to my family often conflicted with my study schedule, and threatened my academic future.
Now, my father is self-reliant and successful in his new occupation, the pressure has eased considerably. I believe that I was able to overcome the challenges of the past through careful preparation, effective time-management and self-discipline. I achieved a report of ôAcademic Excellenceö in mathematics this summer, and am now a PR assistant in a school ESL program. I also tutor in a mathematics lab on a part-time basis.
Today, I am focusing on self-development, and am determined to pursue my educational goals with diligence. My family are very supportive of my plans for the future, and appreciate the sacrifices I have made to assist them in securing their futures. I am grateful for the opportunity presented to me by our familyÆs migration to this great country, which offers the best possible educational opportunities.
