At the age of 18, I haven't had a lot of meaningful events in my life. I've had a lot of disappointing events (such as not getting the person I loved to agree with me) and I've had a lot of happy events (mostly social events with friends, some of whom I even miss). But "meaningful" is a big word and it suggests that some sort of change is connected with the event. In that case, the most meaningful event I have experienced so far is moving from South Carolina here to Austin. Since "event" has to be a frozen moment in time, I will have to say that the "event" was my decision to come to school here.
Frankly, I had no strong impetus to come here. I didn't have a family history of relatives who had come here and been "Longhorns" and I didn't grow up around "Longhorns." As a matter of fact, looking back I can't even remember why I wanted to come here. A lot of it had to do with marketing I suppose. The school was made out to be fun and exciting and the people were pretty and it seemed entertaining. The website was good, especially the journals written by the first year students. Some of those got me thinking the wrong way.
For instance, in my wildest dreams, I couldn't imagine getting up at 4 a.m. for a study session. And I couldn't imagine "bull sessions" with the guys. Don't get me wrong. I had a lot of friends in South Carolina, but I can't remember ever talking about anything important with them. We talked about a lot of things (none of which I could write in this paper) and we all had big dreams that seemed to change every week or so. The dreams finally settled on either becoming a hip hop band or marrying Christine Aguilera.
Actually, it was probably one of my high school counselors that got me thinking about coming here. I had gone in for the session after some of my test scores came back, and the combination of my scores, and the fact that my folks weren't millionaires cut down on
