Bernieri, F. and Gillis, J. (1995, Summer). The judgment of rapport: A cross-cultural comparison between Americans and Greeks. Journal of Nonverbal Behavior, 115-130.

The authors conducted a judgment study in which Greek and American viewers assessed the degree of rapport between unacquainted persons involved in discussions--50 video excerpts of 50 interactions between people of the opposite sex. The videotaped couples were instructed to discuss controversial topics and to try to persuade their partner of their own point of view. The study found no significant cultural differences in ratings among the Greek or American viewers. A drawback of this study is that the authors do not make clear what ethnicity the videotaped couples were, a factor which could have made a difference in the viewers' responses.
