This review of the literature concerning the topic of positive effects of alternative schools, will address the following areas relevant to the study: introduction to alternative schools and alternative programs; alternative schools; alternative programs; and additional factors involved in successful schools and programs.
Educational reform is a movement that has been motivated by a report in 1983, by the National Commission on Excellence in Education. This report was titled, "A Nation at Risk" and response to its negative implications have included many methods of reforming and restructuring schools. Alternative schools and programs have been results of this movement. Alternative schools and programs both offer a special curricular theme or mode of instruction (Dyson & O'Sullivan, 1998, pp. 242-244).
