Following each rape, he would again turn on the charm and walk the confused victim to a nearby Tube station. Ekezie was arrested at least three (3) times for almost identical allegations and each time released from custody with no charges being brought against him (Busker caged for life, 2002). Unfortunately too many people in our society will make generalizations about the aberrant behavior discussed above and foist an onus on all persons of African descent. The problem here is not the fact of EkezieÆs being of African descent. The problem is a legal system that would release a dangerous human being back into society to prey upon others. This is not a fault of race, culture or ethnicity, it is a fault of a broken legal system.
Another example of the rampant bigotry that still exists in the United States is contained in a recent article in The Gainesville Sun newspaper which talks about a lawsuit brought by two African Americans against an icon of journalistic reportingùthe 60 Minutes television show (Ex-Jurors File Suit Against '60 Minutes', 2002). The United States fought a Civil War over the issue of slavery and bigotry over 150 years ago and continuously declares itself to be a ôworld leaderö in civil rights, often criticizing other countries for not having a liberal enough policy in this area.
According to Scott (1999, 80-81), memory, community and criticism are undoubtedly linked. When these are properly practiced, one could argue, criticism is a community's mode of remembering.
