The characters here become more interesting than the countries they are spying on. When Montague spots Harry getting romantic with Kittredge, whom Montague is soon to marry, Montague does not even mention it (159-60). Instead, Montague later uses Harry's affections for Kittredge to get information about Harry's activities on highly confidential CIA projects. And Cal Hubbard seems more interested in advancing himself within the CIA than he does in developing his personal relationship with his son. This becomes apparent when Cal Hubbard encourages his son to break CIA protocol and disclose to him the nature and scope of Harry's most confidential work.
