Bloody Sunday was a part of the War of Independence in Ireland. The flames of Irish nationalism had never been extinguished during the centuries of English occupation but they had begun to burn particularly brightly in the last decades of the Nineteenth Century. The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) was formed in the 1850s; its sworn intention was to overthrow British rule in Ireland and establish an Irish Republic.
