1988. Unwanted childbearing increased significantly among women with less than a high school education, and black-white differences in that group were much more striking than those among women who had completed more formal education. Furthermore, increases in unwanted childbearing were also most pronounced among women living below the poverty threshold, and differences between poor black and white women in the proportion having an unwanted child grew considerably after 1982. It is clear that some of the ground gained during the 1970s in improving women's ability to regulate their fertility was lost in recent years, primarily among poor women, black women, and those with relatively little education. Although family planning programs in this country were often instituted to target low income women, these are the women among whom unwanted childbearing has recently increased.
