Previous research has failed to empirically investigate the link between incarceration and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD results from the experience of a traumatic event and represents a syndrome with symptoms that are ongoing and require specific treatment. Aspects of incarceration may be considered a traumatic experience. For example, solitary confinement during imprisonment has been shown to lead to severe psychological consequences, including suicide.
