Genetic diversity has been connected to behavior patterns in a wide range of species. But opinion is not uniform in the literature. A study of mammals (Chesser, 1988) concludes that genetic relationship is not necessarily advantageous for continued evolution of a species, though it may help a given group respond or adapt to a specific environment. Genetically diverse subgroups of the same species may, however, foster the phenomenon. Competition between genetically diverse groups does not make the subgroups permanent adversaries. Indeed, it may actually prevent predatory behavior within the same gene pool and foster cooperation that "result[s] in the greatest genetic representation in future generations" (Hamilton, 1964; Chesser, 1988).
