Apart from exploring the historical context of their relationship, I also used a deconstruction question to challenge the client to examine her attitudes towards her relationship with her husband from a different vantage point: "Did you notice at all, for the seven and a half years you've been married that he did these things before, but they just didn't get your attention?"
