The earliest Roman epic is often attributed to Livius Andronicus, a slave who was freed because his Roman master appreciated his servant’s wit and intellect. Livius composed a Latin translation of Homer’s Odyssey. However, this work was more than just a copy of its Greek predecessor, taking the original Greek work of art and injecting it with Roman values and influence “His [Livius] Odyssey was more than simply a translation, for he managed to find Roman equivalents for Greek ideas, creating a consciously Roman work, and providing the inspiration for many of the later Latin poets” (The Earliest 1).
