While there are social and linguistic aspects to the study, the project focuses mainly on issues of linguistics and questions that directly relate to second language acquisition by adult immigrants. Specifically, the project is designed to study three main linguistic concerns:
The factors on which acquisition depends;
The general structure of second language acquisition with respect to
the order in which elements of the language are acquired
the speed and success of the acquisition process;
The characteristics of communication between native and non-native speakers of a language.
The approach adopted by the study is similar to what is known as the interlanguage approach, one that has two main assumptions which characterize it: the internal organization of an interlanguage (or learner variety) at a given time is
