Because of the relative instability of the region, witness the amount of turbulence even in the past decade, there appears to be a considerable struggle for influence and power over the area. Both India and Pakistan are located near the Persian Gulf, and as the global need for oil has increased, so too has the tension between the points along the Gulf border. In addition, the revolution and recent Soviet presence in Afghanistan has made the region one in which there seem to be several issues of merit.
