By making the main focus of the play a male one, Shakespeare has, in effect, made it quite easy for his audience to see the "shortcomings" of Gertrude, and he adds to this effect by allowing the audience to see the similarities across mild changes in rank (with Ophelia). In all, its not difficult at all to see these two women lacking inner strength.
