eceiving treatment MPA was 15 percent, whereas the rate of relapse among offenders not receiving MPA was 68 percent. Further, the lower rate of relapse among offenders who were receiving MPA continued to be demonstrated when other variables were accounted for including age, race, marital status, employment, socioeconomic status, diagnosis, and sexual orientation.

As can be seen from the foregoing, the combined psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy approach appears quite promising. In an effort to better understand the success found for the approach, Coleman, Cesnik, Moore and Dwyer (1992) studied 13 male sex offenders who had been or were being treated with psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy.

All subjects were administered the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale. Results of treatment were said to be quite hopeful in that findings revealed that subjects exhibited: (1) a reduction in anxiety and depression;

(2) a greater ability to engage in the process of psychotherapy;

(3) a decrease in paraphilic obsessions;

(4) an increased control over paraphilic compulsive sexual behavior;

(5) a reduction in other non-paraphilic compulsive sexual behavior;

(6) a reduction in nonsexual obsessive-compulsive behaviors; (7) an increased understanding of their cycle of compulsive sexual behavior; and

(8) improved concentration, memory, and other cognitive processes.

The efficacy of cognitive-behavioral treatment for sex offender recidivism rates was examined by Marques, Day, Nelson, and West (1994). In this regard, the authors reported preliminary results from a longitudinal study of the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral treatment with three groups of sex offenders: (1) a treatment group who received cognitive-behavioral intervention; (2) a volunteer control group (those who volunteered for but did not receive treatment); and (3)...
